Haar krachtige werken, die impressionisme en expressionisme verbinden, worden door Sonja Brussen alla prima geschilderd (nat-in-nat). Haar techniek en kleurgebruik zijn sterk en zeer persoonlijk. In het veld laat ze zich beïnvloeden door wat er gaande is in de natuur: zon, kou, wind, regen. Al deze invloeden dragen bij aan de totstandkoming en sfeer van haar werk. Daar hoort voor haar ook het geluid van de natuur bij: de vogels, de wind, een plons in het water en het geritsel in de struiken. Die natuurbeleving is zo intens, dat je, als je naar haar werken kijkt, je direct ervaart dat je midden in dat stukje natuur staat. Je kijkt daardoor niet alleen naar een afbeelding van de natuur, maar je maakt er als het ware onderdeel van uit.
Opgeleid door gedreven docenten en afgerond met de upgrade op ArteZ (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten) weet zij zich steeds te vernieuwen. Sinds 1998 werkt ze als professioneel beeldend kunstenaar vanuit Lochem en nu ook vanuit Torhamn (Zweden).

For the painters among us I can proudly tell you that my own set of brushes can now also be ordered from the English company Rosemary & Co! I have been using them for years and they are great and I am happy to share that...
As a full-time plein air artist I prefer to work in all weather conditions and seasons. My work is recognizable by the thick layers of paint and the firm brush stroke. So I also have quite a few requirements for my painting supplies and brushes.
I have been painting with the Ivory brushes from Rosemary's Brushes for years. And yes I really think they are great, they are synthetic brushes that dance beautifully over the canvas and they are also firm so that they can handle the thick alla prima paint very well. They are softer and more flexible than the traditional hog hair brushes, but firmer than many of the synthetic brushes on the market. They retain their shape very well without losing that flat firm touch.
The long handle ensures a sensitive contact and the set contains different sizes that I use on large and small canvases. The two pointed round brushes that come in the set are for the small details like grasses at the water's edge.
I have to say that the Rosemary and Co Ivory Pochade Set is also a must-have if you travel a bit as a painter. The handles are shorter and they are easy to carry in a small backpack with your pochade box. Plus they have the same great quality and functions as my brush set. So if you are looking for a bit more freedom in your work? Then I can highly recommend these two brush sets!
Over the years I have used and tried many brushes. For me the search ended when I tried the Rosemary brushes!
